Augmented Reality (AR) vs Virtual Reality (VR)

Technological advancement is a neverending process and we encounter numerous terms every day. Today, I want to talk about two of those terms: Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality.

In my post about Second Life, I have already mentioned the difference between the virtual world and virtual reality. As I mentioned before, the difference was that VR allows you to be detached from the physical world via headsets, the virtual world allows you to see that world through your avatar by using your computer. In addition to these two concepts, Augmented Reality is much different in that it augments the already existing things in our world, unlike the virtual world and VR. In virtual reality, we are isolated from the real world and we experience a computer-generated simulation of an alternative world or reality. On the other hand, AR does not promise us another reality or world out of our world, but it combines our physical world with computer-generated virtual elements within our field of vision to enhance it. In other words, VR replaces what we experience whereas AR inserts other things like sensory modalities such as audio, olfactory, or visual into our existing world. Both of these make this happen through technological devices such as headsets ( HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard) or simply through smartphones in the case of AR.

Here is my creation that I made via Unitear app:
